Uninsured (UM) and Underinsured (UIM) are No-Fault insurance coverage add-ons. They are arguably one of the most important choices you will make in your insurance coverage determination. They are contractual in nature and are not required under the Michigan No-Fault Act. They are an election on your insurance application. and I advise everyone to make the full highest paying election.
It is better to be safe than sorry. Review your policy and ensure that the policy contains the highest dollar amount for BOTH uninsured and underinsured contract provisions., as dependent on the insurer, they may be separate elections. I have seen clients who lost out on hundreds of thousands of dollars because this coverage was not elected on their policy.
This election is a protection that if you are involved in an accident and the other party is uninsured, or does not have an adequate coverage, your own insurance will provide coverage in access to the other party's small or lack thereof, automobile insurance policy. This ensures that you will receive the compensation you deserve.
